Implications On In-Breeding of Cats

Filipinos are fond of having a pet in their households, be it a dog or cat, these creatures brings a different kind of joy and excitement. To add, it gave us a sense of responsibility.

Being a cat person myself, it does gave me a different sense of fulfillment every time I see my cats crawling up to me or wanting to play with me. There is just that “something” in them that gave me joy and relieves stress every time I am with them.

As of writing, I have 13 cats and all of them are indoor, 6 males and 7 females. None of the were neutered or spayed yet. That is where the problem would arise because they just keep on multiplying. Although some of the females keeps on giving birth, however, most of the kittens, if not all, would not grow bigger or will not mature. Most of the kittens will not reach maturity. We have been wondering why it happens like that when in fact proper care and food and vitamins were given to them. Among those kittens was Angela.

I did raised this concern to our vet and that’s when she mentioned about in-breeding.

WHAT IS INBREEDING

Inbreeding is the breeding of closely related cats. It could be father to daughter or mother to son.

IMPLICATIONS OF IN-BREED CATS

Cat owner who are into in-breeding of cats know exactly what to expect with the kind of offspring their cats might be. And, in our case, we already expects either a Ginger , Tortoiseshell or Black cats.

However, there are setbacks for this way of reproduction. It may lead to depressed immune systems and other health issues. It may, as well, lead to inheriting the same health issues. Also, it may create an offspring with congenital deficiency.
